In PV modeling, the process of elevating GHI data to a tilted surface is often referred to as "transposition". However, strictly speaking, "transposition" in mathematics refers to rearranging a term within an equation, or to exchanging rows and columns within a matrix.

I've gone through a few seminal papers by Perez, Klucher, Duffie and Beckman, and the term "transposition" is not mentioned anywhere. Of course, the meaning of a "transposition model" is now well defined in scientific literature (e.g. D. Yang, Solar Energy, 136, 2016), but does anyone know the origin of this term? (i.e. where it was first used in PV (or solar thermal) modelling?)
