Please any suggestions as organizations start looking at what is called "Big Data"; do you think universities will do as well? Your contributions are so much appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and efforts.
We are, at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, just starting our project on Big Data Analytics. The solution is to investigate the feedbacks from the society regarding the graduates from our university. In addition, many of complaints/suggestions from our studetns/lecturers/researchers/staff can be collected and analyzed through the system. All these data are from many social channels. We have never got such data from the formal feedback forms that we use in the normal quality assurance process.
Big data is a broad term for data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate. Challenges include analysis, capture, data curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, and information privacy.
Well, I think yes they are. Universities deal with students feedback as well as surveys to improve their performance and ranking; for instance the UK universities keep sending questionnaire about student satisfaction and sending inquires every year. moreover, universities have a hug data about their students, staff, alumni, and investment project, so definitely yes.
I agree, though Big Data is a relative term. I don't think universities are likely to work with real-time data in the way that some industries are doing. On the other hand, take the typical student feedback survey that only comes after the end of the module. If feedback could be taken and analysed more quickly then changes could be made that actually help the students in this year's class, not just next year's. The issue is collecting the data more than analyzing it. You can get instant feedback using keypads, the university's VLE or even Facebook (I imagine) but absolutely instant feedback has many drawbacks, not least the lack of any reflection.
I think a number of software companies are emerging specifically to generate and manage big data from academic institutions. Among these are:
http://www.campuslabs.com/
https://www.digitalmeasures.com/
Both of these companies seek to collect, collate and correlate data into information that can be used for accreditation and other activities. Campus Labs has integrated with the IDEA Center to collect teaching evaluation data as well (http://ideaedu.org/)
This is just the beginning of assessment data being derived from course management systems and other far-reaching big data applications. This is an exciting time in Higher Ed I think!!
