There are some excellent ultrasonic flow meters available but read carefully claims of accuracy and note all disclaimers. While these might achieve a high level of accuracy under certain ideal conditions in a laboratory, this does not mean that you can stumble up, clamp one on to any old pipe anywhere, and measure the flow to that same accuracy. Accurately measuring any flow in any pipe is an extremely difficult and complicated task, regardless of the instruments used. There are many good references on this subject published by ASME, CTI, IIHR, USNRL, TVA, etc.

Ultrasonic flow meters are ideal for clean liquid applications such as water and oil. Better for level measurement also. The Doppler type of ultrasonic flow meter measures the Doppler frequency shift of the sound waves scattered by particulate matter in the fluid. The frequency shift provides information on the velocity of the fluid.

Prem Baboo Thank you for your reply good sir. I didn't mention in my first question. The application is for pharmaceutical industry. Usually, the pipes (AISI 316 material) are filled with mixtures of water-like products and oliy products with different viscosities (emulsions for example). Often, there are micronised powders dispersed inside the fluid.

Judging by your analysis, there are not "clean fluids", they're rather multi phase fluids and a doppler meter would be more suited, right ?

Remark. Classical ultrasonic flow meters and doppler type, both use ultrasonic waves, but one measures the time delay (classical) and the other measures the frequency shift (doppler), right ?
