It is a pity that in our universities in Iraq , smoking is allowed all over the campus except at the lecture rooms , though administrators, teacher & other personnel are allowed to smoke in their offices as well …this is may be the reason why students are encouraged to smoke outside the lecture rooms ,,,

As a previous university professor who is very allergic to cigarette smoke , I had to resign in 2000 because inhaling cigarette smoke affected me badly and I had angina ,,,Five years later I came back ,,,and in 2008 , I had a second angina -after which I had to retire because my health deteriorated due to this problem ,,,I am only one person yet there are many people who are allergic to smoke ,,,why do we – passive smokers have our life endangered because of others’ whims ,,Nowadays all over the Arab countries a new smoking fashion is spreading very quickly & widely = this is called shisha whose danger has been proved worse than the cigarettes ,, it is very popular among young people ,,,

I blame the ministries of health all over the world as they are in charge and should be responsible for this slow killing process ,,, what amazes me is the large number of doctors who smoke in their own clinics & hospitals ,,, there should be world wide awareness campaigns - especially in the undeveloped countries ,,, I suggest that the WHO , UNICEF ,UNESCO and all other concerned humanitarian and health organizations as well NGO s adopt this important project in order to save people from cancer , pollution and deadly diseases caused by smoking =

I wish we keep writing in all languages in order to make our voices heard …

I wish that the whole world follow this policy ...SMOKING is the worst contagious habit among the youth and nowadays even children ,,, as for university students studies and statistics show that most students adopt this bad habit to impress each other or to be in the group ,,, In Iraq as well as all Arab countries nowadays there is not much discipline nor control concerning such habits and no one can prevent them from smoking as long as they smoke outside the classrooms ...

Surely if this policy is implemented all over the world in the campus the whole world will be healthier and cleaner ,, I wish this dream becomes a reality ,,,it will be my own personal dream becoming true because I am very much allergic to cigarette smoke and it have caused me stroke twice as it makes my blood pressure fluctuates and my blood poisoned as soon as I inhale air polluted with smoke ...

NUS is a non-smoking campus since 1997. I have seen people smoking less when they are at the university rather than outside. So, I guess it is a good method to reduce the smoking act..

I strongly confirm Adrian Toader-Williams 's ideas about forbidding smoking in univdersity campuses and also in all educational as well other institutions and establishments

In many of the campuses in Boston there are signs posted outside of all entrances to buildings and placed on the inside of doors that people leave from. Making sure there are signs on the inside of the doors people leave from is particularly effective because as people go out to go on a smoke break they cannot miss or pretend to not see the sign. On top of this, the security guards that check your ID as you walk into the buildings will go up to students and ask them to put out their cigarettes if they are smoking. I have never seen a student refuse so I do not know what the actual repercussions are.

Repercussions are, at best students stop smoking for good eventually,at worst they stop smoking only while on campus.

Smoking is addiction so if you prevent them from smoking many hours a day while at the university ,,,,smoking hours will be less ,, in the long run ,,their body and blood will be accommodated to this and eventually they will cut down and most probably stop smoking altogether ...

Yes, smoking kills and with that it destroys the "investment, the effort put to educate the person" . I would not offer study grands or financial support to smokers.

As an associate professor at a Japanese university I have encountered many students who smoke. It had been the policy of the school to allow the students to smoke outside anywhere on campus and those teachers who smoked were allowed to do so in their offices. However, that policy has fortunately been changed so that smoking is only allowed in a few areas outside of buildings in specified locations around the university. I appreciate this new approach but I have had to complain to students who are violating these rules and it makes me feel like I am their parent. I would hope that the security guards at the gates would police the area and tell students who are smoking in restricted areas to stop. Unfortunately, this has not taken place and when I called on one student to stop smoking in a restricted area he used a vulgarity in response. Non smoking areas around the country are increasing but not fast enough to suit my tastes. Hopefully, as the new students come in and view the restrictions they will abide by the rules and smoke only in the designated areas.
