Even better moisture conditions improve legumes BNF, high soil nitrate can inhibit N2 fixation of legumes. Such an effect is usually ignored or underestimated because the plant grows well. What are the options for keeping high N2 fixation under long term no-till stems? I came across a few recent publications, mainly from Russia, that suggest breeding for high soil nitrate conditions. The have used hypernodulated mutants of pea plants as the breeding materials but I am not convinced if these can help to keep sustainable BNF under NT systems.
