It is believed that GSS studies provide students with general knowledge including knowing their right, nations’ constitution, divers culture, and some other things. It is no doubt that GSS has an impact on students. But I think this is much applicable to the disciplines sciences, engineering, or medical related disciplines. Why so? Some days backward, I had a conversation with some art students especially those studying law or religious studies, or political sciences. On the course of the conversation, I discovered that most of them had very little or no information concerning sciences or medical related terms. The most annoying of them is that some are less knowledgeable of the common diseases facing the world and how they are transmitted, or how to get rid of them including HIV Lacer fever, and so on. Considering the fact that GSS courses are centred on art related courses. It was then that I began to wonder the essence of GSS in Nigerian universities. Could it be that those courses are destined for sciences (so that they would be knowledgeable about their right and their nations’ constitution). Why would Nigerian universities not have general courses that would create awareness to students on medical related terms including the most common diseases. If GSS are think they are really helping, they should consider some courses on medicine or it would be considered as a cheat to the art students.
