Agriculture and crop science in China: Innovation and sustainability
Abstract: The International Crop Science Congress (ICSC) is a regularly held event allowing crop scientists to integrate current knowledge into a global context and international applications. The 7th ICSC was held on August 14–19, 2016 in Beijing, China, with the theme “Crop Science: Innovation and Sustainability”. As a companion production for this great congress, the nine papers collected in this special issue feature important fields of crop science in China. This editorial first briefly introduces the 7th ICSC, followed by a brief discussion of the current status of, constraints to, and innovations in Chinese agriculture and crop science. Finally, the main scientific points of the papers published in this special issue are surveyed, covering important advances in hybrid rice breeding, minor cereals, food legumes, rapeseed, crop systems, crop management, cotton, genomics-based germplasm research, and QTL mapping. In a section describing future prospects, it is indicated that China faces a full transition from traditional to modern agriculture and crop science. The drivers of innovations in farming listed in the question are working for centuries rather than decades in the 'Dutch' homelands of the first answer. Maybe recently the developments, including innovation are faster.
Here a few empirical examples of innovations over the past decades in no specific order. Injection of liquid manure into cropland soil, green (from evapotranspiration by crops) water recycling in green houses, baling of grass and maize silage on the field, breeding of herbicide-tolerant crops (to facilitate weed control), automated milking of dairy cattle. The list is so long as to wonder why are the Dutch for decades among the global top three agricultural exporters (France and the USA are the other two)? Relatively to other big global agro-exporters. The climate is lousy and the soils mostly 'unsuitable' (poorly drained; nutrient poor and saline without the countrywide hydrologic engineering) and the farm and field surfaces small.
Maybe market-orientation, product specialization, transport infrastructure, specialized cooperatives, investment capital, agricultural policy including land policy?

There are very many new technologies and dimensions in agriculture. From my side, we are working on sustainable agriculture based solution to micronutrient deficiency by introducing biofortification through an agronomic approach, targeting increasing iodine in food crops, as high consumption of salt is being discouraged on the account of its association with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases.
