Hello all,
I will be dabbling in carbonylation chemistry using nickle and CO. Given the extreme toxicity of nickle carbonyl how would I go about neutralizing any that has formed in a reaction mixture?
-The internet has been unuseful in this regard thus far.

Metal carbonyl, any coordination or complex compound consisting of a heavy metal such as nickel, cobalt, or iron surrounded by carbonyl (CO) groups.
The carbonyl is acting like a Lewis acid. This synergistic effect strengthens themetal carbonyl interaction. It also weakens the CO triple bond (as electron density is being inserted into a antibonding orbital on CO). Therefore TM carbonyls display weaker CO stretches in IR spectroscopy.

It appears that Oxidation is a good way to trap and neutralize metal carbonyls. Using simple 3% hydrogen peroxide (Which is more oxidizing than permanganate and less oxidizing thand F2) seems to instantly precipitate solids from Nickel and Cobalt carbonyls. It is not verified but this precipitate may be the metal hydroxide species which is far safer to work with. Following reaction with nickel carbonyl, a vacuum pump is used to remove large amounts of the volatile nickel carbonyl and the output of the pump is bubbled through a double bubbler apparatus charged with a HCl/HNO3/Peroxide mix which has turned green over time.
Hi Robert Lebrun , just in case that this problem will come up again: Nickel tetracarbonyl is indeed extremely toxic, and its vapors are highly volatile. I think a safe possibility to destroy small amounts of Ni(CO)4 is treatment with an excess of elemental iodine. Within ca. half an hour, insoluble NiI2 will form. Of course this must all be done in a well-ventilated fume hood as carbon monoxide is liberated
