You need to refer ASTM code on "Standard Test Method for Diagonal Tension (Shear) in Masonry Assemblages". The code number is E519/E519M. According to this code, two steel loading shoes shall be used to apply the machine load to the specimen. The code says especially at the lower loading shoe, you need to place a gypsum capping material. Fill the space between the specimen and side confining plates with the capping material in order to avoid crushing at corners. You need to apply the capping for at least 2 hours before the testing.
