from time to time I work privately on biological projects, so far I worked mostly on hydra vulgaris, oligactis, various bacteria and fungi, this time I am interested in the neonothopanus gardneri mushroom, which is known for its intense bioluminescence, but poorly there are no sources to get a viable culture. Does anyone of you know a source, maybe even university or similar who actively grow such a fungus and may be willing to give me a culture?
I know this is a strange question, but I am looking for this species for a very long time no, without success. I want to figure out optimal growing / bioluminescence medium.
Researches believe this mushroom( Neonoothopanus gardneri ) make light the same way that firefly does, through a chemical mix of a luciferin compound and a luciferase. Scientists haven"t yet identified the luciferin and luciferase in fungi. One of the scientist has suggested that maybe the mycelium is glowing to attract the enemy of these insects, and will eat them before they can eat the mycelium but have no data to support this. I know, thats the reason, why I want to do my own research to it, but I am unable to find a live specimen I could obtain to start a culture
