The book' The Selfish gene" written by Richard Dawkins would have significant bearing in understanding genetic basis of behaviour.

In fact, 'Selfish Gene' is quite an old stuff, and much confusing from the beginning (that made Dawkins write 2 more revisions afterwards). I think his 'The Extended Phenotype' is much better and nuanced description. I would also recommend Robert Hinde's 'Individuals, Relationships and Culture' and Richerson & Boyd's 'Not by Genes Alone' for wonderful alternative explanations of animal behavior, and especially human cultural behavior.

I have gone throgh the book. I do not agree with the author in several points for example body as gene producing machine. I think the book reflects some biasness. Sociogenomics has been emerged now. but still I feel this type of writing creates debate, generates thought and in turn help in clarify the concept

Behaviours are simply the survival strategies. But the diverse and opposing behavioural phenomenon are difficult to explain by any given formula. For example, there is conflict and cooperation; there is infanticide as well as parental care.

Sorry to bring in a layman's comment in this scientific thread. Contradictory behaviors in animals can be explained at least. But, what about the humans? The one who talks about "The Inconvenient Truth" lives in a mansion with 18 rooms, each with two ACs... a carbon footprint greater than 10 Indians or Chinese. :)

Ha ha! Speaking about the "Inconvenient Truth" is a Survival Strategy for its author ! But he is not alone. You will find an army of these hypocrites around you, preaching frugality of resource use to reduce C footprints of others, only to ensure "sustainable pleasures" for themselves. Within India, you will find small islands of prosperity, drawing on the ocean of the poor's resources. Only the poor get the blame for their population size!
