A researcher should always have multiple research projects in "the pipeline." While open is under review you can be writing the manuscript for another and collecting data for a third. It is not a good idea to wait until a paper is published to begin planning the next.

Psychology and neuroscience are putting paid to the myth of effective multitasking: we cannot focus on more than one thing at a time but we can shift our focus from one thing to the next with surprising speed. (There is now much research on this subject.)

In general, I believe it is difficult to be able to conduct more than one research at the same time, especially when the research is single author. But sometimes, multitasking in research is possible in case of multiple authorship.

Doing multiple researches is only possible when you allocate certain time to every project. Its kind of like shifting focus from one task at hand to another with proper time allocation. Other factors like no compromise in quality are also important.
