I have successfully synthesized lanthanide up-conversion nanoparticle using hydrothermal method, they are hydrophilic in nature with positive surface charge as confirmed through DLS.
I want to make surface charge negative.
I know there are lot of articles about surface functionalization, but most of them are related to switching from hydrophobic to hydrophillic.
can anyone please share the relevant information about it?
I am not specialized in Lanthanides' nanoparticles, but as far as I work on surface functionnalization, what comes-up to my mind is that you can graft aminated or carboxylated organic molecules in order to attech them to your surface and you'd be having the hydrophilic (organic part) oriented to your media. In other words, your nanoparticles would become hydrophobic.

I'm not sure how you confirmed positive charge with DLS as the latter technique only measures the hydrodynamic diameter of the particles.
You can modify the charge with changes in pH or additions of appropriate species such as the optimum level of phosphate. Be aware that the charge on the particles is modified by the environment in which they arise. You need to consider the chemistry of the situation first and foremost (precipitation of hydroxides in alkaline media; dissolution in strong acids etc). The measurement of zeta potential may be useful to gauge stability. You will not find this attached webinar useful (registration required):
