It may be that a study of natural materials could obviate the need for creation of "artificial optical materials".

Can Gravitational Lensing be separated from overall Gravitational ElectroMagnetism (GEM)? Does GEM work at all scales? Sorry: I tend to ask more questions than I can answer; but I hope this helps.
