I am trying to measure the micro-vickers hardness of a dual phase alloy. The hardness of both phases are very different. But I am facing an issue, I am using a load of 25 gf for dwell time of 12s. But the indenter shape is not coming sharp and regular mostly at the interphase. And hence it's difficult to measure the Vickers hardness precisely. Can someone suggest me solution for this issue. Thanks!
In order to measure the mean hardness of a multiphase alloy as precisely as possible, you need a large imprint and for this corresponds to the large load on the indenter, preferably over 1 kg. With a load of a few grams, you do not measure average hardness, but the hardness of individual components and grain boundaries.
Thanks for your reply. The load of 25g is very large for aluminum (it's giving a large impression). I was having a doubt whether we can use 1 kgf load for a multiphase alloy with alpha-Al also being on of the major phases? Can you please clarify this. As generally for soft materials like Al, I had seen the recommended load of 25 gf in literature.

I didn't know it was about aluminum. A load of 1 kg is quite common for steels. But even for aluminum alloys you should take more than 100 g load without problems. It's very easy to try.
