I am only interested in methods that don't change the GAC's surface chemistry or absorption capacity. The ionising and non-ionising irradiation methods we have looked into seem likely to affect the GAC as well as biota. It might be a question of dose?
What about ultras sonic sterilization as used in medical applications (water, water isopropanol, commercial solutions)?
Thanks for the suggestion. I think this method does not sterilize, so is normally paired with a sterilization method when used to clean equipment in e.g. medical applications. I also imagine that high intensity vibrations might damage or alter the GAC microstructure....
Concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide Vapors, Heat and Gamma Radiation have high efficacy in "killing" Biota. I would first perform an assay to determine the Bioburden of your GAC. using that data as a a baseline a starting doesage could be derived, and adjusted as might be required. SInce heat was used to initially "activate" the GAC, that might work for your requirements~400C, Gamma could potentially be a solution with a low dose something on the order 1-5 KGr, has a good kill rate, A lot depends on the Biota and the associated levels in your GAC.
