Systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses of published data, and meta-analyses of individual data (pooled re-analyses) are a potential means to jointly summarize and assess different published data. However, this approach is not yet adopted widely. Which are the main constraints behind that?
One possible reason could be that performing a state-of-the-art systematic review needs resources (people, time, money). Depending on the underlying interest and aim (e.g. to get something published, to summarize a topic to convince decision-makers or funding bodies about its importance, etc.), if one thinks that the same goal can be achieved with less effort than most will probably opt for the less burdensome way. (An answer based on empirical evidence, own experience, and not on systematic research).
