The memristor satisfies a unique nonlinear algebraic relation between flux φ and charge q:

φ = f(q)

The term "M" is a differential memristance

M=dφ/dq = df(q)/dq

ie M is not a constant but depends on the charge q.

For a constant M, the memristor becomes a linear resistor.
