How can anyone measure reflection coefficient from the PML region, using FDTD, in a hollow (εr=1) rectangular wave guide, knowing only the fields for every time step inside the wave guide, while the fields inside PML are not extracted? Is there a straightforward way?
I see, I can evaluate the fields inside the PML region, but I thing that is more correct to evaluate fields for 2 different geometries, at the same time, with and without PML, because inside PML region the field has not a steady state through time. But you're correct, the think I want to measure is the reflection both from PML and the metallic boundary condition.

Yes, but because not every time perfect matching is occured, due to the depandance of the wave impedance, I think it's good to know the amplitude of those small reflections. In my mind comes the very general case, where isn't known a priori our ecxitatio what produces (travelling or evanescent waves and for what mode)
It's the most straightforward method indeed, but when someone changes the length of the waveguide, the space increments change slightly. Thus, it's a little bit difficult to find the exact same axial field for 2 different simulations. Unless you have to treat size with cells, not meters
