Based on the real application of the tools during my daily work, the implications of AI on higher education will be more positive than negative. Think of it this way, comparing it to the concerns people were raising that industrial 4.0 technology would take over their job. Consequently, the results prove to be very positive in that it enhances their job. The effect of AI will be the same. What is there to discuss is rather the ethical aspect of it instead of the concern that it would take over human jobs, as it would instead enhance the effectiveness of how human would do the job.

AI implications on higher education is a double edged sword as it's poised to revolutionize higher education both positively and adversely. It has capacity to immensely enrich learning experiences through personalized training, automate administrative tasks to improve the student life experiences, improve teaching methods through data derived methodologies, and enhance knowledge accessibility for students worldwide. On the flipside there are obvious concerns on ethical use of AI, and the digital divide and this calls for heightened vigilance and checks and balances to ensure academic credibility is maintained. In a nutshell, AI has great potential to transform higher education, but its implementation must involve careful consideration of both opportunities and challenges it poses.

“I have previously addressed the possible positive and negative effects I see AI having on higher education and its institutions. I view AI as the ability to both first store extraordinarily rich data and information, as well as its ability to intelligently access and process selective sets of data from that storage and memory. In those two capacities, I view AI as both assisting as well as potentially derailing the teaching and research capacities of higher learning. Perils from AI abound, as do opportunities. One must be very alert and diligent in employing AI and stating that the outcome is, or does contain, AI products”.

Here's a bit more of an elaboration on the negative aspects, as I currently see them; these concerns refer mostly to the ethical sides of AI impacts, as well as to certain epistemological issues involved.

Perils lurk when real professors and intelligence will be supplanted by artificial professors and artificial intelligence (something that has already commenced). When real campus and person-to-person interaction will be transformed into a virtual campus and virtual, online, interaction of students with machines and robots.

From my point of view, there is a positive and strong impact of artificial intelligence on education in higher education institutions, especially since all higher education institutions will introduce artificial intelligence tools in the field of learning and teaching. I would also like to point out that there is a strong demand from many students and faculty members to benefit from it. Tools held in the field of artificial intelligence, in addition to the fact that many universities in the world have identified a specific specialization in the field of artificial intelligence. In short, the negative point of view that poses obstacles to artificial intelligence is that humans will be dispensed with in the future and will be replaced by artificial intelligence. This is a limited thought that does not possess creativity or originality.

Following any technological advancement, and AI is a technological advancement, emphasis is always placed (especially by its advocates) on the perceived advantages it holds over existing (prior) technologies. Most of the respondents to my question eloquently pointed out such benefits.

Rarely however, if ever, and for sure to a lesser extent, emphasis is placed upon a technological innovation's expected (currently at the time of its introduction) shortcomings (and often dangers) it might pose to various sectors of a social or economic system. A glaring example of this proposition is the introduction of new technologies applied to war, for instance the atomic weapons' related technologies.

In my response to the above question (on the potential implications of AI upon Higher Education) I obviously attempted to primarily delve upon the currently perceived negative effects. From a strategic viewpoint, if society (and especially the Institutions of Higher Learning, i.e., Colleges and Universities) learn early enough on how to address those shortcomings, then the expected benefits will be, in my view, enhanced. As I pointed out, these negatives are touching not only the essence of applying AI tools in the functions of teaching and research proper, but also on the very structure (physical and managerial) of Colleges and Universities. Hence, these implications are almost certain to significantly (certainly not marginally) impact how Colleges and Universities physically will look like and perform.

In concluding this reply by me, and drawing from my previous active academic career at the University of Kansas as a professor, and as a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie-Mellon University, Washington University at Saint Louis, and the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in Greece, knowing the importance of budgeting and how of essence available economic resources are to a university's viability, it seems to me that AI will be instrumental as an instrument for budget allocations by various Boards of Regents (on top and down to) Chancellors, Deans and Program Directors seeking to reduce operating budgets. This avenue is, in my view, key in understanding the perils of AI upon the Form and Functions of the Academy.
