I need to measure the biological activity of the cytokine Interleukin 2 (IL-2) by its effect on CTLL-2 cells so that I can determine its EC50. I was informed that the specific activity of IL-2, in international units, can be determined using an internal standard IL-2 that is set by the World Health Organization (WHO). I have not however heard back from WHO and so I was wondering what other ways I can test the activity of my IL-2 sample?

You can buy the WHO IL-2 standard from the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC). They are based in the UK, but will send the IL-2 out to you as lyophilised material. Then you can reconstitute it and use in your assays at a known concentration, either as a stimulant for your cells or just to create a standard curve of IL-2 for quanitification in your unknown samples.
