Some cases of acute Haemobartonellosis reffered cases in our clinic occured 14-30 days after a surgical intervention (castration etc). Since Haemobartonellosis is a vectorial infection, surgical stress could be involved in accutization of an occulte infection, or surgery instruments may be involved?

Mycoplasma haemofelis (Haemobartonella felis) exists in blood and may be transmitted by surgical instruments, when the instruments have not been properly sterilized. But, it is more possible that those animals have been latently infected and the stress induced by surgical procedure has caused the disease to be activated. I draw your attention to the following statements from the book “Infectious diseases of the dog and cat” by CE Greene:
“Iatrogenic transmission of Mycoplasma haemofelis can occur by the transmission of blood from normal-appearing carrier cats. Experimentally, M. haemofelis infection has been transmitted by the IP and IV injection and PO administration of infected blood.”
“M. haemofelis may be an opportunistic agent that exists commonly in healthy cats and produces disease when the cat is stressed by other diseases or surgical procedures.”
I fully agree with Dr. Salvati especially if it is a latent infections in animals. Stressors provoke clinical manifestation of the disease. Working with unsterile instruments mechanically transmitted infection which is in this case a real danger but also professional malfunction.

I agree with other collegues. The latent infection and the stress of surgical procedure is most likely when a cat develop the infection after surgery
