In my personal opinion mathematics contains elements that can be regarded as artistic. While the selection of axioms follow some underlying structured processes, they can be regarded as masterpieces selected to make harmony of the subsequent mathematical structures. Also the selection of proof methods in itself and how you go about them can be considered an art. While it follows strict rules(so do art in how to mix colors that are pleasing to the eye as well as fundamental medium  techniques) whether you choose a proof by contradiction or a proof by construction is itself an art and a measure of the experience of the person building the proofs.

Note: I am taking the definition as art as an expression of skill that can be appreciated by its elegance in construction

Math is a science, however clever math derivations can certainly show a certain artistic flair. And too, there is aesthetic beauty in math, as there is in science, although that beauty is not the goal. That's why they are not art. That's the difference between art and science.

The beauty is in how the universe works, which math and science so eloquently codify.

I remember we all laughed in our physics class, when our book said that the symmetry of Maxwell's equations "was good for the soul." That's beauty, but not just for the sake of beauty.

To Einstein's experience, Art was the modest way that his Physics thesis was not accepted. 

According to me,

"Mathematics is more art than science because of its creativeness as is common in the art".

Science is basically study of nature and natural phenomenon whereas, art is creativeness. As mathematics works as a tool for science mostly, as a result most of the person term it as science but in reality developing a mathematical concept is nothing but a creativity which reflects art.

My answer is based on my experimental studies with mathematics.

Mathematics is certainly Science because most mathematical models are deduced from logic and reasoning. This makes it scientific.

Science is generally recognised as being that set of studies which in their pursuit of knowledge in their area employ experimentation according to 'the experimental method' aka: The Scientific Method. Some of these experiments may be conducted through only applying processes of thought, thought experiments which apply mental processes to imagined objects, whilst the others implement and examine the consequences of applying physical processes to physical objects.

The place of mathematics in both of the above is to provide verified, accurate, appropriate tools with which to develop observations, inferences and conclusions in the course of conducting experiments, be they thought experiments or physical experiments. These applications of mathematics identify mathematics as a tool of science, but in that of itself does not identify mathematics as a science.

The development of mathematics, on the other hand, largely follows a methodology which is scientific in that conceptualisation takes place in the mind of the scientists which forms the basis for the design of processes which experiment with the concept to ascertain whether or not the concept has merit and then, by further experimentation, to determine the exact mathematical form that best describes the concept and which makes its application accessible for others to use. The latter being not dissimilar to the engineering and design phases following the conceptualisation and confirmation of the existence of new physical phenomena.

However. Underlying both the conceptualisations of all ideas and also the choice of investigatory tools and methods - intellectual, mathematical and physical - in all extension of knowledge just as in the development and application of new skills and techniques by artists whose constructs feed into and expand our emotions rather than our stores of knowledge - suffusing all these activities comes the inspiration and creativity which we call 'art'. We are not robots of rationality and logic. Nuclear physicist, cosmologist or social scientists we all rely upon that seminal spark of insight, and all of the little fires of inspiration that it lights along the paths which we then follow, or choose - inspirationally - not to follow as we scientifically apply our existing knowledge through rationality and logic to the insights irrationally born within us.

Only machines are rational and logical, and no machine yet built has been awarded a Ph.D.!
