I am trying to make a 500mL stock solution of 1% Biotin, but the solution is not turning out the way I expect it to. I initially added 5mg of Biotin powder to ~495mL of DI H2O. That seemed too small, so I increased it to 500mg per 500mL (1mg/mL). I added 1M NaOH to help the Biotin dissolve, but the solution that resulted was too clear than what it should look like.
What am I doing wrong?
An 1% solution means 1 g of a solute in 100 mL of solution. So, to prepare 500 mL 1% Biotin stock solution the right amount of Biotin to be added before adjust the volume should be 5 g.
You made a simple math error. A 1% solution is 1g per 100 ml.
Dissolve your 5 g of biotin in less than 500 ml of water. Once it's completely in solution, then adjust the final volume to 500 ml.
You will have to add one equivalent of base to dissolve the biotin. The solution should be clear. Be careful not to add more base than needed to neutralize the biotin's acidity. The resulting solution should have a neutral pH.
