I'm new to XPS and struggling to make sense of the data we are getting, specially the background noise.
The background noise is lower when the sample is cooled. Does it have to do with the temperature or with another variable?
Other things that may be relevant:
The sample we are measuring is YBCO which is a superconductor, and we are cooling it to below the critical temperature.
The sample at room temperature has very little carbon, but the carbon peak increases quite a lot when cooled. We assume this comes from CO/CO2 absorbtion.
Because of the way the instrument is set up, the position of the sample will probably change a bit when cooled. The x-ray focus was not changed between the two measurements.
