I agree with David Wooff that your context is important. If you generate a list of questions that are pertinent to the learning outcomes that need to be achieved for the lesson your ninth graders are participating in on the day that you do your research, it will make more sense .

You might like to use 5 scale , like , strongly agreed , agreed ,nutral, disagree and strongly disagree

Likert scale can be used to measure different dimensions in research. However if one dimension is measure in point 5 scale, then other dimensions should have point 5 also. Now what is point 5? This means number of options you are providing for close ended statement to measure a particular phenomena. For example Strongly Agree (5), Agree (4), Neutral (3), Disagree (2) and Strongly Disagree (1). This is also example of bi-polar Likert Scale with negative and positive pole and a neutral in between. The example of uni polar Likert scale will be Strongly Agree (5), Somewhat Agree (4), Agree (3), Little Agree (2), and Rarely Agree (1). Uni polar should be used we researcher is sure about the dimension outcome. For example "apple a day keep doctor away", we know most of the respondent would agree, but we want to measure the degree of agreement, so we should use uni polar Likert Scale.

I discussed the Likert Scale on Agreement, we have other options as follows:

FREQUENCY

•Always•Very Often •Sometimes •Rarely•Never

IMPORTANCE

•Very Important•Important•Moderately Important•Slightly Important•Not Important

We need to follow this to avoid measurement error. If you want to make your dimension measures more aptly, you can use point 6 or 7 scale also, for example:

LIKELIHOOD

•Almost Always True (7) •Usually True (6) •Often True (5) •Occasionally True (4) •Rarely True (3) •Usually Not True (2) •Almost Never True (1)

The determination of Likert Scale should depend on the statement you are developing for your your close ended questionnaire.

The motivation scales tap into three broad areas: (1) value (intrinsic and extrinsic goal orientation, task value), (2) expectancy (control beliefs about learning, self-efficacy); and (3) affect (test anxiety). The learning strategies section is comprised of nine scales which can be distinguished as cognitive, metacognitive, and resource management strategies. The cognitive strategies scales include (a) rehearsal, (b) elaboration, (c) organization, and (d) critical thinking. Metacognitive strategies are assessed by one large scale that includes planning, monitoring, and regulating strategies. Resource management strategies include (a) managing time and study environment; (b) effort management, (c) peer learning, and (d) help-seeking. Do you require a Likert scale. It is a single session- lab based. Why can not you focus on "transfer of Learning"- May be you can construct/develop a customized inventory to asses the actual learning. Its better than the perceived one.
