Agreeing to "Zin Eddine Dadach", critical and creative thinking is the key to life-long learning (LLL). That is the way that urges or persuades one's curiosity.
A number of places in Holy Quran, Allah almighty has invited the mankind to look around curiously, observe keenly and you will find my wonders everywhere, consequently you will find me. Most of the time, this invitation is in the form "Didn't you see/observe, how things are working etc. like a boat rows in the sea, how do the birds fly, can you go out of the range of blue sky, you ever think about your birth? how he converted a drop into flesh, bones and then the soul and give you the shape you really proud of......."
Another place in Quran, "How can a knowing and an unknowing be equal"?
According to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W), learning starts with birth (mother's lap) and ends with death (grave's lap). That's indeed the true definition of LLL.
In one of His (S.A.W.W) prayers, "O my Lord, give me enhancement/sustenance in my knowledge."
These are few of many example that not just encourage but strongly recommend LLL as an essential part of Human life.
(I seek Almighty Allah's forgiveness, if there was something added/missing)
From my experience, critical and creative thinking are very important for long-life learning. After graduation, students could use them to solve any future technical or social problem. In my teaching style ( anlogies), my questions (why?) and my lab experiments ( theory dos not work) I push the students to think critically and I also evaluate their ceativity. In the exams ( problems with missing information or extra information), critical and creative thinking of the students are also more important than the final results.
I stay in a professional group or membership. Currently, I am a member of the Computer Science Teachers of America and the American Association of Physics Teachers. The CSTA offers many seminars throughout the year, bringing in new technology and offering hands on sampling of these technologies. I go to as many as I can! The AAPT also does some of this, but they are harder to get to and I have only managed to attend one...which was amazing! These learning opportunities keep me informed of new technology, battle classroom stagnation and boredom and provide the necessary documentation for the continual education requirement of being a teacher in the USA.
Once a day, learn one new thing in your own field of knowledge
Once a week, spend at least one hour [two preferably] on a "Rabbit Hole Trip" on Wikipedia [just skim and follow related links that seem interesting]. It will give you plenty of seeds for #3
Once a month, read a book outside your field of knowledge
Once a year, go somewhere you have never gone before.
some of the subjects give very tough time in which the rapid progress when the subject is on the way. For that purpose continuous study is important. Some time research is also important if the field is extended rapidly like Medical Sciences and Computer Sciences.

In my point of view L L L help in learning to live together and with others, peacefully resolving conflict, communicate across and within cultures, sub-cultures, families and communities, discovering other people and their cultures, fostering community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience, and social inclusion. L L L emphasis on learning to learn and the ability to keep learning for a lifetime.
To enact lifelong (continual) learning (in my field of science education) I follow this wise advice (and share it with my students) from the noted writer C.S. Lewis:
"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream another dream."
Once a goal or dream is identified by the individual, the multiple ways others in this discussion have identified (e.g., self-directed reading) are enacted naturally.
I appreciate the question and the resulting conversation that is enriched by my fellow contributors.
I completely agree with the idea of life long learning... it has been one of my teachings for many years. 'Be a Student of your Passions' is my often used phrase. First of all it should be easy to be a student / learner of the things we are passionate about, be it hobbies, career, interests or potential interests.
I do think, however that no one can convince us to become a life long learner... that drive comes from within. Someone in our lives might have made us curious enough to start the L L L journey, but to continue to the end must be part of the nature of the learner.
We keep our brains fresh and energized by learning... creating new neural networks. We show a keen sense of the world around us by our actions reflecting that the only constant is change and that change, but definition, involves learning.
We can be actively involved in more academic and social groups by becoming and staying well read.
We can inspire our students by tying together various current events and scientific findings of all disciplines by study and learning. When the 'Trappist' planet group was discovered I set up a short slide show for my seventh grade resource group. Wonderful reactions!
I will be 87 when my grandson graduates high school... I plan to have many discovery discussions with him between now and then related to all subjects, but especially to those he finds interesting during his life's journey. My intention will never be to push, but to participate. Without the desire to life long learn, I can only be a sideline observer; which is NOT my style.
The first element that helps sustain lifelong learning is motivation; motivation may be external and come from work, family and/or social environment, or internal because the person has already set lifelong goals. Motivation opens doors to a number of other elements that we need to be aware of and focus on, namely, open-mindedness, accepting otherness, building networking groups of varying interests, travelling, allocating time to do routine meetings with groups of like-minded thinkers, and building trust with people we believe in their honest and transparent advice.
Thanks. We agree with your point of view without any doubt. Each religions emphasized - "to learn and to learn...Enhance your knowledge to serve better to humanity".
Life long Learning (LLL) is quite important. Some people believes that after receiving their diploma from the University they have learned everything possible to learn. In my understanding, it is the most harmful thinking. One may learn till their last breath.
In my case I am continuing my learning ever use seconds. The methods I use:
i. Reading books, Newspaper, Facebook post, blogs etc.
ii. Watching movies, video clips, documentary etc
iv. Listening music, commentary, pod casts etc
v. By doing. While doing things we do mistakes and we learn from mistakes not to do the same way again.
vi. Through observation, what other people are doing, how their doing, what they are avoiding, on which they are emphasizing etc.
vii. Sharing with others, not necessarily she/he should be an expert, some novices may give you a very effective idea about your problem to be solved.
Most importantly, for LOL you need to have an open mind and don't thing that you have learned everything so far. If you have inquisitiveness and look for better solution, keep your eyes open, ear attentive and mind free from any judgemental thinking, you will learn. Thanks
Life-long learning are important. Please enumerate and list how you do this. What is your strategy and tact to this regard?
Possible list includes:
Don't confine learning is only through specific means / channels - learning can be anything, anytime & anywhere.
Know when to dig deep & when to cover the breadth.
Reflect what you'd gone through / experienced & ask yourself what you'd learned / lesson(s) learned.
Document down those learning which are significant to you & store some where you can search / retrieve / refer later.
Never stop reading.
Never stop brainstorming with others - regardless their backgrounds
Never stop networking with others - this can be done through attending / presenting in research conferences, participate in social networking like ResearchGate etc.
My only strategy for life-long learning is commitment. No commitment nothing can happen.
I think lifelong learning is a natural process. We are learning during all the life. Of course, if we want an intentioned process, with specific goals, and regulated, it is important to talk about the LLL Pedagogics and Didactics. My expertise is more about the Didactics -learning and teaching-. In this order, I can say if we want a success intentioned LLL it is important to work on the metacognitive processes because Metacognition gives us autonomy and teaches us how to learn.
In a first moment, Metacognition is about how we become aware of our mental processes, what we know or do not know, how we learn, what are our abilities or shortcomings, how we process information, how we solve problems, etc. In a second moment, Metacognition is about how we manage all our cognitive processes and elements -mentioned above- for proposing action strategies to learn -the things we do not know- and to solve problems. In a third moment, Metacognition is about how we evaluate our action strategies, in order to reformulate or qualifying them.
Taking into account what has been said, LLL process mediated by Metacognition support persons to understand more about their own learning and to be more autonomous.
I think none would be at odds with me if I declare that another effective means to bolstering the virtue of life long learning in education, besides instilling the sense of critical thinking in students, would be developing the strategy of learning independently from teacher's presence or at least quasi -independently with softened instructional roles in the classroom. I believe students will gain larger space to engage in active learning and so promote their ability to sharpen their life-long know-how if the teacher distances himself or herself from old -dated modes in teaching ( which actually stress teachers' presence as the ever-know-er)and in return embraces novel methods that are learner centered.
Considering the accelerated pace of disruption cause by the exponential technologies in all industries, life-long learning is a sine qua non to remain competitive in the labor markets. There is no option than continuous training and learning.
My strategy to stay current and promote life-long learning is to engage in research. Research active academics read a lot, become critical and analytical, and gain knowledge that helps to stay current. I am also open to suggestions and criticism which are useful for learning.
Lifelong learning is defined as "all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment-related perspective". The best way to get people involved in lifelong learning is through professional development.
Strategies:
Validating individual practice and competence.
Engaging learners in new knowledge and skill acquisition.
Lifelong learning or education throughout life is fundamental for the person. Being up to date in those fields that directly concern the person is a challenge. They favor the continuous training, the realization of courses, days, seminars, congresses, etc. On the other hand, reading, the social networks of the professional field, the media are elements that favor it. What we call "non-formal education" or "informal education" are concepts that explain lifelong learning, from which the person can not detach.
