Is the role of “Academic advising” only limited to increase students’ understanding about the curriculum or beyond this?
I believe that good academic advising goes beyond making sure that the student understands the curriculum. A good advisor should help the student make decisions concerning his/her career. Students do not have the experience that an advisor has (both personally and from guiding other students), and thus can not effectively weigh how certain choices will affect their taken path towards their goal(s). Apart from the core requirements, some classes are more helpful than others towards achieving certain goals. Some students may be weak in certain topics/subjects/skills (e.g. English writing, mathematics, creative thinking), and an advisor should steer these students towards classes that strengthen these weaknesses, and even more so if they are important for the student’s final goal. Due to the more personal knowledge that the advisor has of the student, an advisor should also watch and detect sudden changes/inconsistencies that occur in the student’s academics. This may signal any number of problems that the student is going through, which can be addressed quickly and efficiently. In doing so the advisor can act as a “point person” for which other faculty members can bring their concerns to with regards to the student.
To put the above comments into perspective, I am speaking from my experience in liberal art colleges within the U.S., which tend to be smaller than universities (e.g. 2000 students) and highly student focused.
Best regards,
Karl

Dear Dr. Karl N Kirschner, Thank you for sharing your valuable views on this question.
respected Dr. Karl N Kirschner your answer to the question is very good.
Just to add one more statement, The role of Advisor should be ignite minds of students so that they can explore the possibilities and come with innovative ideas and solutions
Hello again,
Good point Prof. Kirmani. An advisor can motivate the students to explore new topics that they would otherwise not consider. However, I feel that it is the role of the mentor and of the professor whose class is taken to excite students, open up their minds to new ideas, and encouraging them to be creative in their problem solving. In my experience, an academic advisor and a mentor play different roles, especially so for a research mentor. Often mentors take over the role of an academic advisor, and thus playing multiple roles in student lives. However, finding a mentor can take quite a while to do. Professor during their teaching of a course/lab can certainly motivate students and change how they approach topics and problem solving. Even without being an academic advisor or a direct mentor, many of my professors had a large impact on how I thought about topics and solved problems, regardless of the class’s subject matter.
Best regards,
Karl
Among the attitudes that should possess , cultivate and implement an academic advisor within your role model considered the following key :
1 - Must be open to change and committed person with his growing personal growth. So let him cultivate basic attitudes for his role as advisor , teacher and social person that is handled in the field of education , and as such is a role model .
2 - The most important attitudes to be cultivated are: empathy , willingness for cooperation and mutual aid , commitment , responsiveness , authenticity, creativity, self- criticism, sensitivity , perseverance, self- determination , honesty and fairness .
3 - Analogous to the case of attitudes, the assessor must be clear on the values that should support such attitudes, such as respect for their peers and the recognition of the rights of students , the role of the educator in value transformation society, committed systematic addition to the pursuit of excellence work.
On the other hand , the teacher , as an academic advisor , has a leading role in
continuous improvement of the educational process, is a generator and producer of knowledge which operationalized through strategies that encourage participation and cooperation of students , creating awareness of the progress and challenges of today , giving freely to adapt to changes and giving tools to transform reality , in other words , think of education as the key resource in enriching and updating the knowledge to his followers revalue the teaching and increase academic quality
Dear Dr. Gonzalo Galileo Rivas Platero, Thanks for your valuable answer.
Dear Karl Kirschner, Gonzalo Galileo Rivas Platero, Mudasir Kirmani, Ahed Alkhatib Thanks for your valuable views on this topic.
Dear Dr Afaq,
An interesting question. Very relevant too, for in some parts of the developing world, academics at least in a middle class sense, has come to be viewed as a tool to secure jobs and regrettably, just about that. We find a crop of teachers (if I may use this term, instead of Academics) who not only have become teachers because they were looking for a job, but who do not posses some of the attributes that Dr Gonzalo referred to - empathy, sensitivity, etc.
A point that I would like to add here comes from an old Indian tradition. The tradition of 'Guru Kul', in which a guru (teacher) took the complete charge of the students, not merely imparting academic knowledge and skills, but also imparting social and spiritual skills and attributes. In the course of years of studying with the guru, the individual student not only equips himself to acquire skills for a profession, but also gains an inner sight that helps him to develop into a good human being. Alas, such systems have vanished with time!
In our enthusiasm to find monetarily rewarding 'careers', many societies have actually taken to replicating education models from developed countries without suitably internalizing them in a way that our social identities remain grounded in our inheritance. This is where teachers can play a crucial role in not only imparting knowledge but also act, by their own example, as the guides for building character that is so essential for good citizenship.
In brief, in my opinion, an academic adviser is not merely someone who equips a student with subject knowledge, but one who helps him in living life as a good human being by acquiring the right attitudes.
Thank you for asking a lovely question.
with warm regards,
srinivasan
Dear Mr. Srinivasan Rajamanickam, Good to highlight a thought. Every education system build an institution with the aim that "How to make a student - a responsible human."
Thank you Dr Afaq. One minor correction is I am a research scholar, not yet a teacher (Professor) !
Dear Mr. Srinivasan Rajamanickam, Thanks for mentioning. Wishing you all the best for your research progress. Good Luck!
Thank you. Dr Afaq. I am focusing on how social activism contributes in bring about good governance (in south asian context), in my research. Will be grateful, if you could give me a few referrals if and whenever you come across them. Have a great day!
Mr. Ahmad, the advices of the academic activities is among the most important and valuable step from a successful development of the academic career of the staff at the Higher Education. In this respect valuable are only those recommendations, however, which are provided from the site of academic staff with outstanding contributions in the field of the education and science. Unfortunately, have Institutions world-wide, particularly Germany, where exsist such function 'akademischer rat'. But these positions are occupied from among the less ranking academics. Unisally young peoples without any experience with the field of the science and the education. Peoples with limited numbers of publication activities and horarium as lecturers and/or assistents. In this respect the an advice from a professor with world established academic reputation contributs more to the career of the young staff than, than the advices of a freshly graduated PhD students, achieving position for 'Academic Adviser'. It is very important to specify, which are the criteria for such position, for example in your country. Because of for different countries they are different. For German Educationa System, particularly, such positions are fully non-useful. In Bulgarian Higher Educational one such position does not exist. The academic advices are provided directly by the professors.
Dear all,
Thanks for your participation.
@ Dr. Bojidarka B. Ivanova's analysis is good that provides a large spectrum of different Academic Advisement systems.
Role of academic advisor should be not only to motivate the student to study but also increase the enthusiasm and make the student to learn more and more things. first of all he should be a friendly person with knowledge sufficient to understand the main crux in the projects understand the student well and act accordingly. My idea of advisor is a person who can make a dull student to really work and understand and achieve something. Many cases are there where there is problem with professor and guidance. Such issues come when the advisor is not that great in knowledge or he is not interested to teach or help the students.
The role of Advisor should be show a path and all present possibilities so that they can explore the possibilities and come with New innovative ideas and fetchers.
Some considerations on the role of academic advisor:
1- Maintain an ethical and empathetic attitude toward students.
2- Keep throughout the tutorial process to increase creativity
Tutored interest also must be critical observer and mediator.
3- You should be able to listen to students and extract
information that is useful for tutoring actions to undertake.
4- Having a management pedagogy of questions to help students
identify their educational interests.
5-Meet the links between different areas of practice and the various courses they offer curricula.
6-recognize the effort in the work of their students
Dear Dr. Gonzalo Galileo Rivas Platero,
Thanks. Could you elaborate about the tutorial process. How this tutorial is related to the the tasks of an academic advising?
Dear Dr. Ahmad:
Some processes can be seen in the tutorial are:
1. Organize ongoing training throughout their careers.
2. Mastering knowledge and structure to facilitate meaningful learning experiences.
3. Plan the teaching and learning taking into account the competence approach, and places them in broad disciplinary, curricular and social contexts.
4. Implement teaching and learning effective, creative and innovative way to their institutional context.
5. Evaluate the teaching and learning with a training approach.
6. Build environments for independent and collaborative learning.
7. Contribute to the creation of an environment that facilitates healthy and holistic development of students.
In academia, these processes are aimed at:
1. To support the student in developing a survey methodology and appropriate work for the requirements of the first year of university.
2. To offer students support and supervision more difficult is- sues in various subjects.
3. Create a climate of trust that allows co nocer other aspects of personal life of the student, that directly or indirectly influence their performance.
4. Report and suggest extracurricular activities for integral professional development of the student.
5. Provide administrative academic information as student requests.
Hi i have just come through this interesting question. I think that nowadays many universities have witnessed increased number of students in all fields. the communication processes and the role of advisors have to be reconsidered again.
Dear all
I like to ask here the "advisor "is the instructor , supervisor or reviewer. I think if we differentiate between the meaning of three terms we can get the idea. But according to me in all these situations, the students need the academic advice to enrich their experience and knowledge. Thank you so much for your question.
Liqaa
Very important question for both academicians and students, thank you so much Dr. Ahmed. At the first stage of a research, 80% of the total duty is belonged to the advisor and the rest ratio is related to his student, after that it will in opposite. In all cases, research is the main task of the student (Post-Graduate one).
Regards, Emad
Dear Dr. Liqaa Habeb,
Thank you for considering the importance of Advising. "advisor "is the instructor. Edit your text and change he to the. I will answer about your interesting point later.
Dear Dr, Emad Kamil Hussein,
Thank you for consudering the importance of Advising. I will answer about your interesting point later.
good greeting:
In an era of speed and information revolution, it is no longer enough to publish your information in a book or newspaper or folded, but it must be made available
To your readers on a webpage and send them via e-mail, but these methods have become a traditional you have to be your social networks on Facebook and twitter on Twitter and manage your channel on YouTube and expand towards Google Plus and Flickr or become out of coverage and Hajrk future youth and stayed in the corner of Qusay away from Movement of society and time.
The academic advisor is keen to develop his website and social networking networks and update his information constantly to keep pace with the pace of education in the world's finest and to serve academic advisor AcadCon University language services in America Britain Canada Australia New Zealand Ireland Malaysia.
Education is the future choice for anyone seeking to provide a better life for themselves and their families. To serve this goal, we provide our students with full information about the best universities in the world in America, Britain, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Malaysia.
Since education has become the future choice, I must choose the appropriate specialty for my ambitions and aspirations. In order to serve this purpose, we provide a brief definition of many modern disciplines and fields of work for specialists after graduation.
As is well known, English is the language of the age in the fields of study and work. This is why we provide information about many prestigious institutes around the world that offer a variety of educational programs in English, both public and specialized.
This information is a theory that we do not actually support on the ground. Hence our academic services. We provide the student with an integrated academic consultation about the university that provides the specialization he wishes to study. We write on his behalf for conditional or final admission. For documents and the processing of visa applications.
Student performance evaluation (e.g. validation of course learning, make some queries on the things that he/she had difficulty/ies in his/her courses taken/program), mentoring and career advise can be done by an academic adviser. :)
Dear ALL,
The current Academic Advising is aimed to provide
• Integrated perspective of General Education.
• Knowledge about policies and procedures.
• Accurate and timely information.
• Realistic options for decision making.
From my point of view, the role of advisor can be summraized in the following points:
- urge students to work by suggesting various topics and ideas.
- guiding students in each step of progress that students do.
- opening a way to push students write papers, attend conferences and publish articles.
- gives the students chance to gain money or improve their economical status. May introduce new companies for future job.
- based on each student capabilites and his research work, guide must make student study several subjects that help him to improve his academic qualifications.
- try to understand the student moody behaviour and the age of each student. Each age needs different way of handling.
- ask students to share ideas and expertises among them and help each other.
- deliver high quality lectures and improve the lecture yearly for the same course to match new technology.
Thanks for sharing this question, but I am already posted my so simple comment.
Emad
I think the comments of Rajamanickam Srinivasan are true and real. But, in academic framework , it is different.
http://www.highpoint.edu/academicadvising/general-information/roles-and-responsibilities-of-advisors-and-advisees/
Most successful professionals did not accomplish their career goals completely on their own, and an academic advisor was usually a part of the team that they counted on to guide them during their university years. Nearly all colleges and universities make the services of academic advisors available to their students, and freshmen are often required to meet regularly with these knowledgeable education specialists. Most of these advisors are assigned to students by their academic major, and advisors are likely well versed in specific departments’ policies and programs. Here are some of the specific job functions performed by academic advisers.
Thanks dear for sharing your question. I think that a good supervising should include correcting the student's mistakes among other things like guiding their schema, inspiring them and hinting them new ideas and leave the ground for them to start up. Regards.
Thanks dear Dr. Arwa, Dr. Mohammed, Dr. Ali Reza, Dr. Emad and Dr. Raed for your interests in this question. Your answers are generating many good points to continue discussing such model of advising systems, enhancing learning, social issues, counselling and many more
Academic advisory has a great role in the development and progress students and institutions in all aspects but sorry to say what is being practiced so far is quit different.
Thanks dear Dr. Ashique Ali,
Your observation "what is being practiced so far is quite different" from perception of advising.
An academic adviser is expected to help and ensure that the student achieved his objective .The methodology may differ depending on the ability and predisposition of the adviser and the student as well as other ecological factors.
Academic Adviser must aim at working towards "Academic Excellence" . For that, the adviser needs to have internal quality assessment mechanism and the scope of continuous improvement.
Create and maintain an interactive environment encouraging mutual trust and open communication.Provide students with information and resources to promote academic progress.Empower students to take responsibility for their academic success.Refer students to campus services relevant to their individual needs.Collaborate with peers by participating in the exchange of ideas, information and philosophies through professional development.
Thanks dear ALL for your interests in this question. Your answers are generating many good points to continue discussing such model of advising systems, enhancing learning, social issues, counselling and many more
Dear Dr. Alireza Khoshkonesh
The link provided by you is quite informative and useful.
Academic Advisor helps and advises students on academic matters. S/he , discusses educational and career plans, and makes appropriate course selections.
the most important question?
Is Academic Advisor selected in the right way to perform its role?
I liked the words of Dr.Kirschner, and I agree with him
Dear Dr. Mahfuz Judeh,
Should we limit the advisor's role to only pure academic or beyond.
Here are some of the specific job functions performed by academic advisers.
The job functions of academic advisors are similar to the ones filled by high school guidance counselors. Some students are well prepared for life at a college or university, and their academic advisors just pick up where their high school guidance counselors left off. Other students need the help of an academic advisor to create strategic academic and career roadmaps for their future success.
You can have a look at this website,
https://study.com/articles/Academic_Advisor_Job_Description_Duties_and_Requirements.html
The role of an "Academic Advisor'
The role of academic supervisor multi-axes as described well by several colleagues, and this depends on each student, there are some students prepared as a good scientific researcher, so the role of supervisor as a corrector of some paths and stimulate innovation
To suggest new courses that are currently in trend and have huge potential in future ,so that students can get expertise in these courses and get jobs....
Dear ALL,
Attaining knowledge with critical thinking, motivation, creativity, problem solving, working in team and time management are some attributes which an advisor has to inculcate in her/his advisees.

Thank you my dear Neeraj, Gopikrishna, Randeep and Dinesh for sharing your views.
Academic advisor must be motivator to faculties and students. Makes students and faculties aware of all possible things need to improve their academic excellence. Appreciations for good ideas, accepting people as they are. Innovator for exploring talent.
As an Academic Adviser, you have a key role in promoting students' sense of belonging to an academic community and supporting their development as a successful learner within Brookes and beyond.
Academic guidance includes:
development of a student's conceptions of learning, study skills and critical self-awareness.
providing and encouraging supportive relations between students, and between aq and students.
providing a holistic perspective on a student's academic progress across the modules within their programme
providing continuity when access to other staff such as module leaders changes
maintaining motivation and a sense of purpose
