in presurgical evaluation, you are usually interested in the localization of a specific cognitive function, most often language and memory, with the aim to spare these areas during surgery. I suppose you performed a language fMRI and got bilateral acitvations, represented by a laterality index close to zero in the SPM LI toolbox (Wilke & Lidzba). This points to bilaterally organized language functions in your patient, which is not that rare in neurological patients.

Why then to look for a different technique? Furthermore, what would tell you a (hypothetically) lateralized resting state network about the lateralization of cognitive functions in this patient?

Yes, the methodology that you have mentioned above is what we have been following for presurgical cases.

But we also wanted to see whether resting could also be utilized to find the LI index in case we get patients where they are unable to perform certain tasks or other circumstances where we would have to use Resting-state instead of task-based fMRI for language and memory.

I think the easiest would be to use the Aicha atlas that will give you regions in the right and the left hemisphere that share the same functional connectivity. You can easily create your LIs with it
