Hope you are aware of interlocking building block manufacturer Lego!
Lego started in 1934 and they started making interlocking building blocks in 1949. Since then they are releasing new building blocks with new exciting themes and you can create life like replica of any real object by using lego blocks.
Above is brief about lego, now come to the problem statement.
Lego 1949 can be connected with Lego 2020 and it works seamlessly. But a magnetic tape or even a floppy disk of earlier computer can't be retrieved with latest machines. So, we missed some chain in between and I am sure that the storage mechanism to store our digital data is not future proof either. All data need to be converted every decade and that's a huge cost.
Are we lacking technology advancement or lacking at bird eye view over problem?
We need to think about the core building blocks of digital storage design and then need to make any new storage or future storage.
I know, the above description is pretty vague but we can start a discussion with this introducing note.
Help me in reaching some conclusion.

The inconvenient truth is that not everything can be made future-proof. Digital storage technologies are just one small example of a universal fact of life. Although one invention that held its own, well enough, is the CD and CD-ROM. They have remained backward compatible with introduction of DVD and BluRay. But even those, surpassed by flash drives and storage in the so-called cloud. (Of course, cloud storage still has to worry about advancing technology. It just happens to be out of sight of the users. Doesn't mean it's not a real problem even in this "cloud.")
You can say the same thing about digital interconnects, such as USB. USB totally eclipsed serial ports and other specialized ports, like the parallel printer port. And USB 3.1 is still backward compatible with USB 1.0. Eventually, we can expect this backward compatibility won't be feasible anymore.
Technological progress seems to follow an S curve. In the steep part of that S curve, it is very difficult to ensure backward compatibility. Simply because, insisting on backward compatibility would severely constrain progress. Designers do try, though.
