I have recently begun teaching at a University, and like most educators I am struggling as to if I should allow laptops in my class or not. On the one hand, they allow students to access the notes and lecture materials, however, I have found that they are very distracting. In fact, recent research shows that laptops are distracting not only to the the laptop's owner, but to other students as well:

Fried, C. B. (2008). "In-class laptop use and its effects on student learning." Computers & Education 50(3): 906-914.

I am leaning heavily towards banning laptop usage from my class in the future. My lectures are very interactive (videos, discussions, etc), and require students submit small assignments every class, using pen and paper. Thus it is not too far fetched to assume that students could take notes via the same method. With the obvious exception that students with disabilities can make use of laptops.

I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the benefits or detriments of laptops in a lecture setting?

Thank you

Travis
