It's difficult to answer this question without knowing more about the Master's course you are studying. I could suggest many kinds of linguistic research which would be suitable for an MSc in Sociology studies, or others that would be suitable for an MA in Philosophy or an MA in Psychology. However, I suspect that you are probably doing an MA or MSc in language teaching. If that is the case concentrate on topics which are of direct relevance - student learning issues, teacher interaction issues, faults and failings in current teaching methodologies, or particular topics in language teaching (e.g. idioms and metaphor). Or you may want to concentrate on more motivational issues, such as what counts as success in learning a language, how does a person know when they have learned a language, what do we have when we have learned a language, why people give up on learning a language, are there teachers and superteachers and how do we tell them apart... There is still a lot of work to be done in linguistics, both as a scientific discipline and as a pedagogical experience. And I haven't even started on multilingualism.

Basically, talk to your lecturers and your tutors about what particularly interests you, and I'm sure they will be able to point you to a topic that will be suitable for both student and tutor.
