Kindly provide me with Detailed characterization procedure of Municipal Solid waste. Both Chemical and Physical characterization procedure. Also kindly provide me with an insight about the standard collection procedure of MSW from dumping yard.
Hi I am now in CSIR Central Leather Research Institute , Environmental Engineering Department. My PhD was on MSW and leather waste co-digestion for producing hydrogen and methane at Leeds Uni in a two phase system.
The answer for your question
The MSW needs to be sorted out first as glass, fibres , woods papers etc.,, and the organics as well to know the composition of each as a source emission inventory of each.to know percapita MSW generation
For analysis you need to do mixed MSW and OFMSW for different waste management purpose like GATE man test TCLP for Land filling DR4 test for Composting and BMP test for Anaerobic digestion.
For characterisation you need to do TS, VS, and FS at 105, 550 and 550 respectively using oven and muffle furnace.
The percentage of VS content out of TS will be the deciding factor for AD and Composting .
Here is a link to a great resource that has further links to large-scale waste characterization studies conducted in different US states. Seeing this will give you a variety of methods to incorporate into your study.
Also, the attached paper can give you a view of characterizing MSW at a larger, country-level scale in terms of quantity. Often, you will take characterization data from one or multiple sites and extrapolate to a larger region (e.g., state or country), so having a grasp on the denominator is often helpful.
