Impact factor (IF) of the journal is a citation-based metric that is used to rank scientific journals, but there have been numerous criticisms over the years, however, a major criticism is that the calculation can be manipulated by journals. I had recently witnessed that a journal asked me the number of references used in my paper from their journal when I was completing the journal submission process. I had to check my references list because of this question, but my view was that this is one of the tactics the journal used to manipulate the IF. I appreciate your opinion.
