I sincerely believe that the present platform is not a place for competition; rather, I see it as a place for collaboration. Believing in the spiritual approach, I see others as members of a community of scholars who belong to the same body and pursue more or less the same objectives. As such, as you have rightly stated, it is all about improving rather than winning. Differently stated, it is all about collaboration rather than competition.
It is not about winning, it is about improving. Do you agree or not?
Winning is a snapshot whereas improving is a continuous process. Sometimes winning can cause some researchers stop progressing whereas improving always motivating researchers keep moving forward. Agreed that participating in RG platform is about improving i.e. surpassing winning - improving in the sense knowledge owners willing to share / contribute and other researchers / learners are learning & reaping the benefits of knowledge / experience from others. Later reapers can turn contributors & this chain effect can kicks in. Through non-stop continuous contribution of knowledge, only then the knowledge can be sanitized & refined as solid knowledge like pure gold.
Indeed, you are correct that the RG platform is about improving. However, I must admit that this improvement prompts me to share my work more readily so that it can be visible. I think I need to make the same kind of investment in giving feedback on my RG colleagues work to bring balance to my participation in RG.
Allow me to choose motivational expressions that reflect the required answer:
*The real competition is always between what you do and what you are capable of doing, you measure yourself with yourself and not with anyone else.
*The recipe for successful achievement consists of only four basic components: Choose a career that you love, give it your best, take advantage of the opportunities that surround you, and be a member of the team.
*Success attracts success, there is no escape from this great universal law, so if you want to attract success, be sure to achieve a part of it, whether you are a wage worker or an emir.
*The road to excellence is rarely crowded. In order to develop the ease of doing work and trust in yourself, you must develop your abilities, and then develop your excellence in using these abilities.
*The amount of time you spend in training is not necessarily important, what is important is your training effort.
It is wonderful to hear from you that this platform is for collaboration. I agree with you totally and I like to thank you for your valuable answer that will enrich my post, no doubt.
This is a very good question. My view is the ResearchGate platform helps us to improve our knowledge and to share our knowledge with others. And also we can develop a network between academics.
I like to quote your words " Through non-stop continuous contribution of knowledge, only then the knowledge can be sanitized & refined as solid knowledge like pure gold." It is really expresses the improvement process. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable opinion.
Your note is very good. I'm thinking just like you that we need to pay attention to give feedback to our colleagues as need theirs. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable opinions.
Is to improve performance and cooperation I feel that we have become like the family to speak with and exchange views and advice as I have benefited from many research reinforced my research and future work
I agree with Dr. Han' s opinion but also the good work needs a motivation or appreciation in the form of prize so to be winning it's needed but not all the time while for improving we need it most of the time
I agree with you that it is important to win but this case happen in competetions not in such platform. I think improvement is more suitable. Thank you so much for sharing your opinion.
Winning is important, but it must become secondary to striving to achieve personal goals. When we are in a competitive situation we learn new things about ourselves. If we are facing a competitor with a higher level of skill, it means we are successful , that is all!
Winning is important no doubt but what I mean is concerning our participation in this platform. I see some researchers as if they compete each other though our main aim here is to improve our knowledge and abilities. Thank you so much dear Dr for adding your opinion.
I agree with you dear Ali Bahadoran Baghbaderani but I'm totally against the idea of obliging others to answer the questions as if we are in a competition. Thank you so much for your addition. I highly appreciate it.
You are well right. Notably, competition is not a bad thing. Only if people link their self-worth to winning it, it might get ugly. According to Coppes, Its very existence proves that there is always room for bigger and better.
for me it is improving and sharing more than winning. unless we are talking about winning more constructive feedback, new ideas and interesting views and questions. I think in RG every one is a winner.
I think it's about winning more than anything else. For example, scientific promotions in my country (Iraq). Thousands of researches are done every year. It is done for no reason other than the scientific upgrade and after use in the promotion is thrown in the trash and no one seen it with great regret
As usual, your selected topics are highly important! Thank you for highlighting such a controversial issue. I would vote for a common ground between winning & improving. For me, I know it is difficult to be achieved; however, if you do your best, I believe it is doable! Of equal importance, you must have the competence to prioritize your available options. In other words, winning a scientific debate might be a valid option in a particular setting. However, improving a certain outcome could be a top priority in another setting!
To me, I believe '' ideal competition'' is good for proper growth and development, When you see yourself as the best you stop growing.....but looking at somebody a head of me keep me on my toes.
If a competitor is used as a goad, it needs to be clear to the other person as well as one's self that the true competition is not the ego of being the best, but doing one's best. Once ego is the prize, the race is lost. Too many bad things happen when ego rules our actions, I think.
