Quality Management System (QMS) is must. QMS can be based on ISO 9001 or any other frameworks of international standards, especially education related.
ISO certification for QMS is optional. The advantage of certification is to get feedback from independent auditors and have areas for improvements. However if certification audits become routine checks with no value addition, then advantages of certification will be questioned.
I agree with Dr @ Mohan Karambelkar. The education and training world is losing much of its special status, and is being considered more and more like an “ordinary” economic sector. This also implies that schools, universities, and training providers are increasingly expected to perform at high level, behave professionally, and provide quality services throughout. ISO published IWA (Internal Workshop Agreement) 2 Quality management systems — Guidelines for the application of ISO 9001 in education. This guideline helps educational institutions (including higher education) to successfully implement ISO 9001 and achieve adequate benefits.
I have never heard of an ISO certification for a university. ISO is meant to set an international standard especially for analytical work in al kind of disciplines.
