As we know numerous lignocellulosic biomass (such as forestry residue, crop residue, industrial products, food wastes, etc) have been used in bioconversion research studies but my question is how much type of lignocellulosic biomass we choose as raw material affect the efficiency of the process and should a particular type emphasized more?
The choice of a specific lignocellulosic biomass depends on the type of your value-added product. For example, if you are willing to transform lignocellulose into biofuels like ethanol or butanol, you will choose the lignocellulose containing maximum amount of cellulose and hemicellulose, for example corn cob, corn stover etc. For a different value added product like fine chemicals or animal feed, you may choose a different lignocellulose for a useful transformation.
The characteristics of biomass are relevant (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), in addition to defining which product will be obtained or which can be obtained. About process efficiency, the biomass definition and the products that will be obtained are relevant to understand which unit operations are necessary and how they will affect the result. I would like to add to previous answers that salts containing sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are the major minerals found in biomass ash, these elements are part of the alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM). For example, during pyrolysis, these minerals, especially AAEMs, act as catalysts and possess a great potential to alter the resulting bio-oil composition. The feedstock could be pretreated prior to pyrolysis to reduce its ash content.
When it comes to the production of value-added products such as biofuels etc or value-added materials such as carbon materials, the choice of biomass really affect the efficiency of the products. The cellulose characteristics of the biomass would play a scalable important when it comes to the production of value-able products such as 5HMF, ethanol etc. As for Lignin which is regarded as the largest biomass source with aromatic property and carbon content, it could be of greater importance for the production of carbonaceous materials.
