It is forbidden in Iran too. Technically this is not a complicated procedure and possibly many of trained nurses can do it. But the problem is the side effects of such a procedure which is out of ability and knowledge of a nurse to handle(e.g. endophthalmitis, Retinal detachment and etc). It seems reseanable that the person who does intravitreal injection should take the responsibility of its complications which doesn't apply to nurses.
In Switzerland only qualified ophthalmic surgeons are allowed to perform intravitreal injections. Ophthalmologist with board examination or FEBO without having passed the examination as ophthalmic surgeon (spezielle Ophthalmochirurgie) do not have the licence to inject.
No not in India. The question is not about doing procedure which can be taught to nurses, question is about shouldering responsibilty if some untoward thing happen .
I think there was a report on about 10,000 intravitreal injections carried out at Exeter, England by Nurse/s. I am not sure where I saw it. Please check the programme of the International Ophthalmic Nurses conference.
