I don't know the answer to your specific question, but I will add the reference of papers about the evolution of P.vivax and P.falciparum, and their origins in African primates:

And there is a similar article for P.falciparum:
Prugnolle et al (2010) PNAS 107(4): 1458-1463. They show the closest P.falciparum to the human one if that found in gorilas from Cameroon.
