you can also check the so-called Global Summary of the Day (GSOD) from NOAA (https://www7.ncdc.noaa.gov/CDO/cdoselect.cmd?datasetabbv=GSOD&countryabbv=&georegionabbv=), which is derived from the Integrated Surface Database (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/isd) and contains many WMO-stations. They provide hourly (from ISD) and daily (from GSOD) station data for precipitation and temperature as well as several other variables. The portal is a bit old-fashioned and might require to download only a couple of stations at the same time but they also provide FTP-access to the data, so you can download the data e.g. via a shell script. A quick search shows that they have more than 200 stations for India but most of them do not cover the whole period that you would need. But this is still better than nothing :)
