There is a fair amount of work on stone composition determination using dual energy CT - A quick pubmed search will yield a number of results, such as this one (random):
Dual-Energy CT for Quantification of Urinary Stone Composition in Mixed Stones: A Phantom Study by Leng S et. al. AJR Am J Roentgenol. 2016 May 25:1-9.
To maximum of my knowledge, there is no way to 100% confirm the type of stone without stone analysis.
However, multiple parameters can help to predict. X-ray will differentiate between radio-leucent, radio-faint and radio-opaque stone. Non contrast CT HU will tell about the density of stone (stones are stratified according to HU density). Urine analysis parameters will guide you too (as acidic vs alkaline urine, crystal shapes, associated infections .. etc). The past history, family history and recurrence will guide about the hereditary and secondary stones. Blood chemistry and associated symptoms may tell about special syndromes.
Yes,there is no way perfect to confirm without chemical stone analysis.
But,urine analysis, blood chemistry ,simple X-ray of urInary tract, non contrast CT HU,the past history, may show possiblety stone density and composition.
I would like to know why you want it for sake of curiosity! Ureteric stones must come out spontaneously or by intervention. Then you can do the analysis. Not a long time to wait!!!
Chemical analysis is the only way to confirm. However, a simple kub x-ray can differentiate radio opeque from radioludcent one. Non contrast ct scan, urin analysis and blood chemistry may give some clue.
k U B can not show small ca oxalate even larger stones located in pelvic brim &can not show uric acid stons at all,so its better to do ct scan with no contrast which can show more than 95 percent of all ureteric stones inspite its location .regards
