What I mean is to induce a selective degeneration at different and well defined neuronal populations. For example; Dopaminergic, histaminergic, orexinergic, glutamatergic and noradrenergic neurons of the brain stem.
It does not induce degeneration but optogenetics may allow you to selectively activate or deactivate specific neurotransmitter systems.
Depending on what model you use, in Drosophila there are models that will allow you to selectively target some population of neurons and kill them.
I would suggest considering stereotaxic injections of neuron specific conjugated saporins from Advanced Targeting: http://www.atsbio.com/catalog/toxins/toxins.html . I have used p75NTR-saporin to selectively target medial septum cholinergic neurons (injected into MS) and have also administered DBH-saporin (i.c.v.) to target noradrenergic neurons.
