An observational study from Eastern Nigeria published in 1980 appeared to have set the stage for the evolving link between change of paternity and pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. The link and reference for the said study are shown below:
Ikedife D. Eclampsia in multipara. Br Med J. 1980 Apr 5;280(6219):985-6. Available at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1601137/pdf/brmedj00014-0029b.pdf
There are a number of studies of variable quality which have attempted to address this question. The following are two such studies with diametrically opposite conclusions:
1. Tubbergen P, Lachmeijer AM, Althuisius SM, Vlak ME, van Geijn HP, Dekker GA. Change in paternity: a risk factor for preeclampsia in multiparous women? J Reprod Immunol. 1999 Nov;45(1):81-8. This study suggests that change of partner raises the risk for preeclampsia in subsequent pregnancies.
2. Wikström AK, Gunnarsdóttir J, Cnattingius S. The paternal role in pre-eclampsia and giving birth to a small for gestational age infant; a population-based cohort study. BMJ Open. 2012 Aug 30;2(4). This study suggests that in women who had a preterm pre-eclampsia in first pregnancy, partner change was associated with a strong protective effect for preterm pre-eclampsia recurrence
Yes I can support that changing of partner increased risk of pre eclampsia, but what if the couple using the condom as part of family planning for long time is there any study showing chance of pre eclampsia in subsequent pregnancy?
