The primary applications of ILs coated on solid supports are catalysis, known as “Supported ionic liquid phase” catalysts (SILP). Therefore high specific surface area and narrow pore size distribution of solid support are desirable. MCM-41 & SBA-15 (mesoporous silica) are some of the excellent choices in this regard.

I think the ionic liquids that you want to coat is more important. As the chemical linker between ionic liquids and silica is sensitive in strong base or acid sometimes, the coating ILs often choose neutral.
