Does anyone know a geotechnical engineering software which can support subset simulation? I need to do some probabilistic analysis of a geotechnical project. However, due to the small probability, I need to use subset simulation instead of the crude Monte Carlo analysis.
If you are running out of computational power you can build a response surface and increase the number of trials to the number you need to quantify a very low probability of failure.
If you have the source code for a geotechnical program of sufficient flexibility, you can drive the entire process within a Monte Carlo simulation and obtain such an effect. I have done this several times with good success. For example, I have used FRAC3D-VS (fractured, variable saturation groundwater flow code from Waterloo), Build3D (3D model builder which I wrote for DoD), and PTRAX (3D particle tracker, which I also wrote) to model several different karst formations.
