Space proton deposit its energy to the semiconductor. Amount of energy deposited depends on thickness and incident energy of the proton.
Yes, if you have highly energetic proton, it in most cases deposits what is called MIP (Minimum Ionizing Particle) energy.
Please note that high-energy particles entering silicon lattice, not only cause damage, but also upset the operation of electronic circuits.
- The high energy particles generate electron-hole pairs in the lattice, and these are attracted
by the negatively polarized source and drain junctions of CMOS circuitry.
- The charge injected there has a habit of upsetting memory elements (SRAM, flip-flops).
- Also, in analog circuits, the charges can trigger turn-on of elements. (eg thyristor). As this then
does not happen in the normal controlled way, the risk of destructive turn on is high.
Best Regards,
Henri.
In some materials, properties such as band gap, thermal conductivity differ along different crystallographic axes. What are the basics?
