Please note that high-energy particles entering silicon lattice, not only cause damage, but also upset the operation of electronic circuits.
- The high energy particles generate electron-hole pairs in the lattice, and these are attracted
by the negatively polarized source and drain junctions of CMOS circuitry.
- The charge injected there has a habit of upsetting memory elements (SRAM, flip-flops).
- Also, in analog circuits, the charges can trigger turn-on of elements. (eg thyristor). As this then
does not happen in the normal controlled way, the risk of destructive turn on is high.
