How are pregnancy and fetal development affected by COVID-19? What happens to the health of the mother and child after the delivery? What is the experience of expected parents during a pandemic? A national study initiated from Gothenburg, covering a majority of Sweden’s birth centers, is focusing on these questions.
The study’s lead researcher is Verena Sengpiel, and Lina Bergman is responsible researcher with main focus on the biological samples on a national level. Both of them are obstetricians at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy.
Hur covid-19 påverkar modern, förlossningen och det nyfödda barnet samt insamling av prover till biobank(How covid-19 affects the mother, childbirth and newborn child, and collection of samples for biobank)
cesarean delivery should be based on obstetric (fetal or maternal) indications and not based on suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection.
Decision should be made on maternal and fetal indication. There are no data at the moment to support the presence of virus in the vagina and the risk of fetal aspiration during the birth process with subsequent fetal infection.
SARS-CoV-2 can replicate in cells that express blood type antigens, says Jacques Le Pendu, a glycobiologist at the University of Nantes. So when an infected person coughs or sneezes, they possibly release viral particles coated in their blood type antigens. That means if a person with type A blood transmits the virus to a person with type O blood, the type O person will have antibodies that can fight the virus. However, if the person inhaling the particles is also type A, they won’t have those antibodies.
Blood types such as O seem to have stronger immunity than other types.
No so far there has been no research being conducted on pregnancy with COVID 19 pandemic. In my country we have reached 100 days from the first reported case and so far only 8 cases documented
Would appreciate being engaged in any research in this area
