I would like to put my participants (language learners) into three categories of lower-, middle-, and higher-class students. I searched everywhere but in vain.
Socio-economic status can be determined and assessed differently. It is best to develop your own questionnaire because socio-economic can be indicated differently -- living conditions, appliances at home, occupation of parents, having cars, etc.
Hi Mobin. Mezzacappa (2004) and Morton & Harper (2007) have measured SES in fairly simple ways and been published in language-based research, so you should be fine following their methods.
Adler et al. (2000) developed a simple yet very effective measure of subjective socio-economic status. They gave the participants a drawing of a ladder with 10 rungs and the particpants should think about the ladder as representing their society and place themself on the rung that best represents their standing on this ladder.
This measure seems to work very well and has been used in many studies.
For more information and a more detailed description of the measurement see:
"Adler, N. E., Epel, E. S., Castellazzo, G., & Ickovics, J. R. (2000). Relationship of subjective and objective social status with psychological andAdd your answer physiological functioning: Preliminary data in healthy, White women. Health psychology, 19(6), 586."
We used Adler's subjective status tool in one of our studies and were quite surprised that perceived social status and objective social status really were quite different. It seemed like perceived social status was more predictive of well-being in our population of urban low-income pregnant women.
My problem is I can't find a reliable questionnaire to measure the students' objective social class. Most studies only claim that we used a questionnaire but none include it in the paper!
Learners' education, occupation, and income as well as those of their parents can all be considered factors influencing the socio-economic status of the participants. Nevertheless, I am looking for a questionnaire whose reliability and validity is already confirmed.

I finally decided to employ MacArthur's subjective SES scale. Not only is it convenient and practical in most contexts, it is proven to be quite reliable and valid.
I am writing a thesis on Influence of Socioeconomic Status on Academic performance of Senior Secondary School Students. Can some one help me with a tested questionnaire to collect data.
