One of the ecosystem services provided by different types of vegetation is the net release of oxygen which is used by other life forms for respiration. Is there any quantitative information about this aspect and how different ecosystem differ in this service?
Most resources on internet give approximations and usually no proper scientific links. Since the way to calculate the oxygen release is to investigate little amount of certain plants in the lab you can see that mixed forests and other mixed ecosystems are hard to calculate.
The NASA used satellite measurements of the light reflection to determine the biomass production of land areas. From the temperature and moisture data this production is derived. The interest was, how much of the vegetation is used by man - terribly increasing. Oxygen is produced by trees as well as planktons in the ocean. In fact the planktons produce more than 50 per cent of the available oxygen. These two are in a balance so that the 21 per cent oxygen level is always maintained in the atmosphere. There are publications on this.
